As the world marked International Women’s Day on Monday (08.03.2010), photographer Alex Kamweru put on an exhibition titled “Women Of Kenya Are...” at Blancos Restaurant in Hurlingham.

Alex told the gathered people that his pictures were to celebrate the inspirational women he has had the good fortune to photograph. The women featured ranged from entrepreneurs to sportswomen and educationists.

With reports that it was raining all over Nairobi, people braced themselves for some heavy downpour. A slight drizzle seemed ominous.

Zippy Okoth who most did not know at the beginning of the show gave a lovely performance. Without prompting a number of people got up to dance to her music. When she stepped off stage a guy shouted, “Come back!”

Henry Bwire has been suffering with Chronic Kidney Faliure for seven years and has been on dialysis since he was 10. Now 17 Henry Bwire has got a willing donor but no money to do the transplant, enter the Figo Foundation...

Figo For Henry, was the newly formed Figo Foundation’s first major project. The idea behind the show was to raise money for Henry Bwire, a 17 year old boy in desperate need of a kidney transplant. As a result a full house had been anticipated perhaps even expected, but the barrage of rain coupled with the infamous Nairobi traffic meant that only about 100 people made their way thorough the doors of the Brookhouse auditorium and took their seats.
