Theatre review: Ding Dong

A wildly hilarious western comedy by Marc Camoletti has been cleverly fashioned for the Kenyan audience with obvious Nairobi landmarks being used but a not so obvious plot complements this play.

Theatre review: Ding Dong

‘Ding Dong’ is one of those unique names that usher in suspense and curiosity.

Just a few minutes into the play and one realizes why the play was named as such. Directed by Mbeki Mwalimu and produced by Eliud Abuto, Ding Dong is a play that had us laughing heartily, sometimes incredulously and this not from any exaggerated actions but the subtle but powerful words delivered beautifully by he actors. The clever remarks tickled our ribs for the one and half hour the play went on with a little suspense thrown in.

The Dreamer

By Paul Munene

At the GoDown Arts Centre the Nigerian theatre group Spirit of David put on a show of the Biblical story of Joseph.

With song, dance, dramatisation and humour the story of the trials of Joseph was retold in a modern way. The dances were a mix of hip-hop and interpretive dance.

The music was mostly modern pop-gospel which tied into the modernity theme in this Christian story.

The theme of the performance was hope and was meant to inspire the viewers to stay positive.

Kigezi Ndoto

By Paul Munene

The Alliance Francaise Nairobi auditorium hosted the performance of two productions ‘Githaa’ and ‘Kigezi Ndoto’ on Wednesday (06.05.09).

Performed in sheng, Githaa tells a story of a group of street hustlers whose operation is intruded upon by a bold new-comer to the city. She (the intruder) gains the respect and acceptance of the group because of her talent and they see her as revenue earner. She helps the group find a sense of identity and also share themselves with the group. Githaa has great comical moments and lovely songs.

“Will You Still Love Me in the Morning?” kept fans laughing at Alliance Francaise in the month of April.

In the plot, Jeremy and Celia return a week early from their
unsuccessful honeymoon (where they even failed to consummate their
marriage) to find that both Jeremy's two bosses Titus and Humphrey have
accepted his offer to stay in his house while he is away – except that
each has brought the other man’s wife with them - Thelma and Sara
respectively.
